Local Government Week runs October 18 to 24 across Durham, and the Region is encouraging Ajax residents to take a closer look at the services and planning that shape daily life in the community.

The annual awareness week is a chance to recognize the people, services and long-term planning that keep the community healthy, safe and connected, according to the Region of Durham.

Services residents use every day

Local government may not be something residents think about often, but its impact is all around, the Region said. Turning on the tap, catching a bus, putting trash at the curb, joining a public health program or accessing community supports all connect to the work of local government.

The Region is inviting residents to explore what connects them to Durham, whether that means learning something new about the services they rely on, the people who deliver them, or the Regional programs that support a growing community.

New video series explains who does what

To help residents better understand those connections, the Region has launched Your Region, a new interactive video series that explores how local government works. Through stories and videos, the series walks viewers through the Region's role in delivering services, how decisions are made, and the many ways Regional programs and services support residents.

The series is available online at yourvoice.durham.ca/YourRegion.

The question of who is responsible for community services, and how different levels of government work together, is one the Region says residents often wonder about. Understanding who does what can help make sense of the programs, infrastructure and investments that shape daily life in Ajax and across Durham.

I've worked at the Region for 15 years and was surprised by how much I learned from these videos. They helped me better understand the services we provide and the work that happens behind the scenes. I recommend them to anyone interested in learning how the Region works and serves the community.

That recommendation comes from Yanming Zhong, a Works Technician with Durham Region, who completed the modules and shared her reaction in a Region of Durham news release.
