A Thanksgiving tradition that has been part of life at Good Shepherd Catholic School for more than 25 years returned on Oct. 7, as the school's Catholic School Council hosted its annual community lunch.
The event welcomed students, staff, families, parish and community partners into the school for a shared meal, according to a Durham Catholic District School Board news release.
The lunch has been running for more than a quarter century, the board said, and it continues today because of the volunteers behind it. The Catholic School Council plans, prepares and co-ordinates the event each year.
Community support at the centre of the table
Local businesses play a large role in making the meal happen. Area grocery stores support the lunch by donating and cooking the turkeys, contributing food and offering discounts, while a local nursery supplies seasonal decorations for the gathering.
This year, students had a hand in the details as well. Grade 4 and 5 students crafted the centrepieces that decorated each table.
The board described the lunch as an event rooted in gratitude and community, made possible through the generosity of the many volunteers and supporters who give their time each year.
It said their service, kindness and care for one another help create an environment where students feel valued, included, respected and loved β and strengthen the sense of community that has sustained the tradition for more than 25 years.
The board offered a special thank-you to Father Neyomal, the Catholic School Council, and all of the donors, volunteers, families and staff who came together to create a memorable experience for students.
The annual meal is one of the ways the school community marks the Thanksgiving season together ahead of the holiday weekend.
