Ajax's MPP is asking residents to back a call for the province to finally build a Highway 412 interchange at Rossland Road.
Rob Cerjanec, who represents Ajax at Queen's Park, has launched a petition calling on the Ontario government to construct the interchange, according to his official petition page.
An exit that was approved, then shelved
Cerjanec argues the case for the interchange has already been made. According to the MPP, an exit at Rossland Road was approved through the Highway 407 East Environmental Assessment Study, but the build was deferred.
In his pitch to residents, the MPP says a new interchange would reduce traffic congestion in the community. He also points to safety, arguing the connection would make Lake Ridge Road safer for drivers.
What the petition asks for
The petition lays out four requests to the province, according to the MPP's petition page.
It calls on the government to build the Rossland Road interchange on Highway 412, to conduct a traffic study, to eliminate bottlenecks, and to improve traffic flow on Highway 401 through Ajax and Durham Region.
Why it matters for Ajax
Highway 412 runs north-south through east Durham, linking Highway 401 with Highway 407 East. For Ajax residents, the highway is a key commuter route, and access points along it shape how traffic moves through local neighbourhoods.
Drivers heading to and from the 401 in Ajax currently rely on existing connections to reach the toll highway. A Rossland Road exit would give the community another direct link between the two highways.
The petition is the latest local push on a roadway issue that touches daily commutes across Durham Region, where congestion on Highway 401 has long been a top concern for residents and politicians alike.
Residents can add their names through the MPP's petition page. The document will be presented at Queen's Park, where petitions are tabled by members and referred to the ministry responsible — in this case, the provincial transportation ministry.
