Ajax residents can take part in a sports prize pack contest and visit activities at the town’s three recreation centres as the Elevate Girls campaign continues through Oct. 11.
The campaign, which began Oct. 5, marks International Day of the Girl by highlighting girls’ and women’s accomplishments in sport and drawing attention to obstacles that can affect participation, according to a Town of Ajax news release.
The town’s social media channels are featuring videos throughout the week with perspectives on females in sport, including local Olympic athlete Sadé McCreath. The online content accompanies the contest and in-person activities, giving residents several ways to engage with the campaign.
Mayor Shaun Collier said the initiative combines recognition of local achievements with efforts to make participation more accessible.
“International Day of the Girl is an opportunity to celebrate the talent, determination and achievements of girls and women in our community, while recognizing that barriers to participation in sport still exist today. Through Elevate Girls programming and this week-long campaign, we’re creating more opportunities for girls to get involved, feel supported and see what’s possible in sports and beyond,” Collier said in the town’s news release.
The campaign also draws attention to the town’s Elevate Girls programming. Chris Vida, Ajax’s director of recreation and culture, described sport and recreation as opportunities for girls to develop skills and build relationships.
“Sport and recreation can play an important role in building confidence, developing skills and creating connections. Through Elevate Girls, we’re continuing to provide welcoming opportunities for girls to participate, try something new and remind them that they always belong,” Vida said in the town’s news release.
The release includes an account from Leiya, an Elevate GirlSport Camp participant, who described trying unfamiliar sports, meeting two Olympians and making friends with other girls at camp.
“Elevate GirlSport Camp has been such a fun and memorable experience for me! I got to try a bunch of sports that I had never tried before. I met two Olympians while I was at camp, which made it even more special! I was also really happy to meet and connect with other girls. I made new friends, learned about their interests, and found out about some of the things we have in common. I had such a great time at Elevate GirlSport Camp and I’m so glad I got to be a part of it!” Leiya said in the town’s news release.
