A 52-year-old Toronto man has been charged after police investigated what they describe as an attempt to transfer ownership of a vehicle using forged documents at a Service Ontario office in Ajax.
Officers were called to the office on October 20, 2026, after an employee raised concerns about paperwork being used to transfer ownership of a 2019 Dodge Caravan away from its registered owner, according to Durham Regional Police.
Staff noticed that the ownership document had not been signed by the registered owner, police said. The man then left the office and walked to his vehicle on his own.
When he returned a short time later, the same documents were submitted again — this time with a signature on them, Durham Regional Police said. A Service Ontario employee then contacted police.
Investigators were told the accused had visited the location on several previous occasions, and staff believed he may have registered vehicles using fraudulent documentation in the past.
Ion Boana, 52, of Toronto, is charged with fraud over $5,000, uttering a forged document, and altering a document with intent to defraud.
Released with conditions
Police said Boana was released on an undertaking with conditions.
Investigators believe there may be additional victims connected to the investigation. Anyone with information is being asked to contact D/Cst. Taylor of the Durham Regional Police Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 5283.
The case remains before the courts, and the allegations have not been tested.
