Richard Wincikaby's Peighntmeadiamond picked up right where he left off, winning Wednesday's featured allowance race at Ajax Downs in his first start since October.

The four-year-old Ontario-bred Quarter Horse gelding, trained by Joe Tavares and ridden by regular jockey Brian Bell, swept to a half-length victory over the previously undefeated three-year-old filly Chillin With Peeps in the 300-yard dash. Embrace Your Fate finished third. The winning time was 15.612 seconds, good for a 92 speed index.

Sent off as the 8-5 favourite by the opening-day crowd, Peighntmeadiamond showed no rust after the long layoff, according to a post on the Ajax Downs website.

A win with a fitting bloodline

Peighntmeadiamond is an unusual runner for the Ajax track: his dam, Swingwiththering, was a Thoroughbred mare who earned more than $280,000 racing at Woodbine and Fort Erie. She was later bred to Peighnt Your Fate, a well-bred Ontario Quarter Horse stallion owned by Wincikaby, who is from Alliston.

The May 27 victory carried an extra bit of racing history. Swingwiththering traces back to Northern Dancer, the legendary Canadian Thoroughbred racehorse and sire, who was born 65 years earlier on May 27.

The gelding has come close in several stakes races during his career and does his best work over longer distances, which had Bell wondering how his horse would handle Wednesday's trip.

I was kind of worried about the distance [on Wednesday], but he has been training stronger this year. We haven't seen the best out of him yet, but it's coming.

That was Bell speaking in a post on the Ajax Downs website.

Maryland Magic keeps adding to his record

The card also featured a milestone performance from one of the track's most durable stars. Maryland Magic, a 12-year-old stallion owned by Milena Kwiecien and trained by Jason Pascoe, won for the 26th time in his career in a 300-yard speed index dash.

In a family affair, Maryland Magic finished two necks and a nose ahead of his own daughter, Magic in Wonderland. The veteran stallion has also sired numerous winners, according to the Ajax Downs website.

Chillin With Peeps, who is owned, trained and bred by Chantelle Bourgeois, held gamely for second in her first try against older horses after opening her career with an undefeated record.

Racing continues next week
