A two-year-old child is fighting for their life after a vehicle struck a daycare worker and five young children at an Oshawa intersection on Wednesday morning, according to Durham Regional Police.
Officers from Central West Division were called to Niagara Drive and Sheridan Street at about 9:20 a.m. on Oct. 21, 2026, after a collision involving a group of pedestrians from a local daycare, police said.
Police said a 62-year-old woman driving a white Volvo sedan southbound on Niagara Drive was making a left turn onto Sheridan Street when the vehicle struck the pedestrians. Niagara Drive has no traffic control at that location, according to police.
The daycare worker had been walking northbound along the east sidewalk with five children, all under three years old, when they were hit as they crossed the street, police said.
Injuries and hospital transports
A two-year-old was rushed to a Toronto-area trauma centre with serious, life-threatening injuries. The child remains in hospital in stable condition, Durham Regional Police said.
The daycare worker and one child were taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Three other children were transported to local-area hospitals with minor injuries, according to police.
The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, police said. She was taken to a local-area hospital as a precaution.
Investigation ongoing
Members of the DRPS Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene to assist with the investigation, which remains ongoing. Police have not said whether any charges are being considered.
Police are still working to determine the full circumstances of the collision and are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Niagara Drive and Sheridan Street sit in a residential part of Oshawa, in the region Ajax shares with Whitby, Pickering and other Durham municipalities. Police have not released further details about the driver or the daycare involved.
